The largest cultural investment since the Sydney Opera House, the new Powerhouse Museum will be the first State cultural institution located in Western Sydney – in Parramatta, the geographical heart of Sydney.
Powerhouse Parramatta is the largest investment in cultural infrastructure since the Sydney Opera House, and the first major cultural institution to be established in Western Sydney.
There will be 18,000sqm of exhibition and public space providing increased access to the museum’s extraordinary collection and is expected to attract two million visitors annually.
It will be the largest museum in NSW and the leading science and technology museum in the Southern Hemisphere. Construction partner Lendlease Construction is responsible for managing the site, and have awarded more than $200 million in contracts to NSW businesses to date, $75 million of that to local businesses in Western Sydney.
Major achievements in construction include:
A 1000-cubic-metre concrete pour - the equivalent of 160 concrete trucks – in one day, the biggest pour of the project
First local steel on site – the blast columns – installed, as part of the 12,000 tonnes of structural steel
Three tower cranes commissioned, including a Favelle Favco M2480D – the world’s largest capacity tower crane
230 piles drilled and installed
Around 35,000 tonnes of soil removed off site.

Powerhouse Parramatta is one of the largest structural engineering and architecturally complex projects underway in Australia.
It is one of the first projects in Australia to use 100% renewable diesel in its tower crane, enabling fossil free construction.
It will be a 6-star green star building with net zero operations from the day it opens.
The museum is designed so that the superstructure is a celebrated architectural feature that is used to articulate the building facades. The buildings are designed with three types of steel lattices as an exoskeleton to the buildings.
There will be seven large-scale exhibition spaces for the Powerhouse collection. Of monumental scale, Exhibition Space 1 will be Australia’s largest column-free exhibition space.
Powerhouse Parramatta will house Powerlab, a co-working space bringing together Powerhouse employees, researchers, industry, partners, students and members of the community into one collaborative working space.
The Lang Walker Family Academy will provide world-class immersive STEM education experiences for over 10,000 high school students from Western Sydney and regional NSW every year, including overnight stays at the museum.
Powerhouse Parramatta is centrally located in Parramatta CBD on the bank of the Parramatta River between Church and Phillip Streets and Wilde Avenue. It is a short walk from a range of public transport options including the Metro, Light Rail, ferries, buses and the Parramatta Railway Station.

What works are being carried out?
Lendlease Building are now responsible for managing the site and are commencing the following main works construction activities over the next 6 months:
How long will construction take?
Main construction works is expected to be completed by mid-2024.
What are the construction hours?
Approved construction hours are Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm and Saturdays 8am to 1pm.
Any planned works outside of these hours will be communicated in advance.
Will any roads or walkways be closed?
Access to the southern shared path on the riverbank between Wilde Avenue and Church Street is closed for the duration of the project for the safety of pedestrian, cyclists and workers.
The existing staircase on the southern side of Barry Wilde Bridge on Wilde Avenue is also now closed to enable construction activity.
Pedestrian access will be maintained via Phillip Street and George Khattar Lane.

Minimising our environmental impact and reducing unwanted mail is important to us. To limit paper usage a ‘digital first’ approach for the distribution of communication material is being adopted.
